Just For One Day Review – Uplifting!

The world premiere of this musical about one of the most famous concerts in music history runs at the Old Vic Theatre until the end of March – so catch it while you can.

Yes, the dialogue is corny, cringy and cliched in places. Yes, the attempts to bridge the emotional and knowledge gaps between a fund-raising event for a famine in Africa 40 years ago and the need to address today’s humanitarian issues and challenges – ‘it will be okay if we all come together’ – may be a bit banal and wooden.

But don’t get hung-up on the message – just enjoy the show, the music and the story it tells.

From the opening song David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ – the lyrics that give the show its title – to the final number, Paul McCartney’s ‘Let It Be’, each song is carefully woven into the storyline, the lyrics pushing the story along – they are not just performed to tick-off songs on a playlist.

The star of the show is the music! Moreover, the performers, and there are no weak links in this very strong ensemble cast, never try to mimic the original artists. The singers and musicians retain their own personalities and styles, giving much-loved songs a fresh twist – they pay tribute to the original singers but are not tribute acts.

The musical highlights? For us the haunting and unique arrangement of Dylan’s ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ – written over 20 years before Live Aid but still wholly relevant 40 years after the event – and the resonating and powerful rendition of The Police’s ‘Message in a Bottle’.

This is a show for everyone (well, 14+ recommended due to the strong language). Whether you remember Band Aid and Live Aid or just want to learn more about a pivotal moment in music history this heady dose of nostalgia, non-stop 80s bangers and great singing make for a great evening out.

Just for one day is at the Old Vic theatre until 30 March 2024. Ticket price from £13 with 10% from the sale of all tickets donated directly to The Band Aid Charitable Trust. More information available here.
