Three Billy Goats Gruff at Unicorn Theatre is a bleating good show

In Justin Audibert's enchanting musical for the over-threes, every detail is meticulously crafted to captivate young audiences.

Shows at the Unicorn Theatre are always a blast and the Three Billy Goats Gruff is no different! Encouraging engagement from the get-go, a mischievous troll prompts shouts of directions from the audience, an intro into how the production will be immersive with the audience engaged throughout.

The sprightly score by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe complements the bouncy numbers, delineating the distinct personalities of the goats. Tiajna Amayo shines as Little Bo-Frilly, delivering belting solos, while Rhys Rusbatch’s droll troll is equal parts funny and scary for audiences adding a touch of quirkiness, a hint of suspense and a sprinkling of humour. We absolutely LOVED the big bellied troll – his dances, his solos and everything in-between. He is a loveable baddie.

The choreography is the sort of dance that appears effortless but is in fact carefully curated and thought out to work well with the actos, enhancing their expressiveness and driving the narrative forward. We all know the story of the Billy Goats Gruff and the loveable nursery rhyme is brought to life with such tact and joy. The neon-rimmed set creates a visually striking backdrop, culminating in a dramatic denouement with the rising golden sun.

While the storyline remains simple, the Unicorn Theatre’s production ensures an irresistibly fun and engaging experience for both children and adults alike, plus the parable like message that the grass is not always greener on the other side is a poignant reminder for both adults and kids to remain grateful of the things we have in our lives rather than to pine for something else.
