“The Choir of Man” is a special kind of show that celebrates camaraderie, the joy of singing, and British pub culture. The show is at Arts Theatre in London until September 2024.

This feel-good production began its journey at The Edinburgh Fringe in 2017 and since then, it’s held multiple sold-out tours that include the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the US and Europe. Following its last run at the Arts Theatre from October 2021 to April 2022, it received an Olivier nomination for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play.

This show has little narrative but is rich in music and fun performances that navigate the storytelling element with ease. We loved the humour and moments that captured the essence of pub culture—the sense of community, the free-spirited banter, and the shared joy of a good song. “The Choir of Man” doea well to showcase the joy found in pub culture, the carefree conversation and the opportunity to meet interesting people. All that is beautifully ‘bottled’ into an hour and twenty-minute performance. By the end, we were stomping our feet, singing, cheering, having been swept up by the show’s infectious spirit.

While the pub is not an exclusively male domain, this production does focus on men and the relationships they have with each other pointing towards male vulnerability at its most raw, and the power of friendship that picks up the pieces when needed. The use of poetic meditation delivers a deeper messages like mental health in men and explores the concept of ‘home’ and the power of community in a way that resonates with us all.

Producer and director Nic Doodson has nurtured “The Choir of Man” to grow and develop just as real-life friendships do. The result is an inclusive and laid-back show that doesn’t feel like a performance at all. For the most part, you simply feel like you’re hanging out with your mates, sharing a pint and a laugh. The experience is wholesome with something fun and uplifting for everyone including free beer!

The cast of nine guys, with their diverse vocal harmonies and strong stage performaces do a great job to entertain. We loved the crystal sound of the acapella performances the most! Characters like the guitar-toting ‘Beast’, the suave-voiced ‘Pub Bore’ complemented by the first rate tap dance performed by the ‘Handyman’ added to the unique charm of the stage, while the four-piece band kept the beats going from the overhead platform.

“The Choir of Man” serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of the local pub in many people’s lives. It’s a place where friendships are formed, laughter is shared, and memories are made—a home away from home. So, raise your glass to “The Choir of Man,” a show that’s a joyous ode to pubs and the people who bring them to life.

The show is a family-friendly affair with an overwhelming positive message and runs at the Arts Theatre in London until 29 September 2024 (ticket prices start from £31) . It is recommended for ages six and up.
