Guys & Dolls needs little introduction as it has been running in New York’s Broadway since the 1950s. With thousands of successful performances, a Tony award for best musical, a movie adaptation and many Broadway and London revivals, the show is still going strong and we went along to see its latest production at London’s Bridge Theatre.
This modern theatre experience is like no other with the stage cleverly transformed to allow the audience to choose between standing and moving around the central modular stage or to be seated to watch the show, including the flow and movement of the standing audience, who often become part of the action.
The stage management deserves the highest praise for delivering a top-notch immersive theatrical experience. This immersive spectacle, that has captivated audiences since its Broadway opening, not only captures the ‘feel’ of bustling New York City streets, its rowdy bars and the steamy romantic Havana nights, but is also bursting with musical mastery performed by a live orchestra and superb cast.
Under Nicholas Hytner’s direction the cast delivers stellar performances, breathing new life into the iconic characters of Sky Masterson, Nathan Detroit, Sarah Brown, and our favourite, the multi-talented Miss Adelaide (played by Timmika Ramsay). There is good chemistry between the actors, and their performances capture the essence of the original production through heartfelt acting and humour.
“Guys & Dolls” is renowned for its memorable score, and this production does not disappoint. The Tommy Entrata Orchestra is a delight throughout the show as well as during the interval’s musical interlude. All musical numbers are performed with such energy and precision that they had us humming long after the curtain fell.
Our lasting impression was that “Guys & Dolls” at the Bridge Theatre is not just a show but more like a party, with stories about love and dreams beautifully performed through song, dance and humour. The stage setup just before the show allows all guests to mingle and purchase the best hot dogs outside New York (we had to have one), or drinks, or even 50s style New York hats. And at the end of the show willing guests are invited to join the cast for a final dance.
We loved the whole immersive experience, from the outstanding performances and the live orchestra playing timeless music, to the scenic London location of this beautiful venue. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the musical or new to its charms, this production is a fun must-see.
