London’s family favourite, the Science Museum in South Kensington has just launched a deliciously fun, interactive afternoon tea and it is great for families visiting the museums. We recently tried it and loved it.
For £22 per child, young guests can indulge in a hands-on approach to tea time. First up the tables are basically chalk boards so there’s no need for colouring in sheets and crayons – get creative directly on your dining table.

The experience starts off a make your own ‘6th element pink lemonade.’ But this isn’t just any lemonade; kids get to mix their own by combining lemon juice and baking soda from test tubes into a beaker mixing container, creating a fizzy, bubbling reaction that brings a touch of chemistry to the table. A touch of chemistry that you can drink. My son loved this element of the experience – drinking directly from the glass beaker has an element of novelty to it too.
After enjoying classic British afternoon tea staples like sandwiches (admittedly of these were a little dry!) and scones with clotted cream and jam (these were delicious), kids get to experiment with their own cupcake decorations using test tubes filled with colourful toppings like popping candy and crushed ‘moon rocks.’ A syringe of ‘blood’ frosting adds to the playful, science-themed fun. We thoroughly enjoyed this part of the experience.
But it doesn’t stop there—desserts include a rocket ship cookie and petri dish jelly. A lot of sugary treats to enjoy. For parents, a £32 adult version is available, offering a more refined take on the theme with cucumber and salmon sandwiches, Galaxy brownies, and unlimited tea and coffee.
The Science Museum’s afternoon tea is a perfect blend of education and indulgence, making it a great family outing, especially if you’re celebrating a birthday or wanting to make more of a day at the museum.
Served Wednesday to Sunday in the Gallery Café, advance booking is essential. Whether you’re raising a future scientist or just looking for a unique afternoon tea experience, this one is definitely worth trying! More info and bookings here.
