One of the world’s most beloved illustrators is getting his first UK museum exhibition — and it’s happening right here in London.
Charlie Mackesy is featuring iconic drawings at Dulwich Picture Gallery in a new exhibition titled Charlie Mackesy: The Boy, the Fox, the Mole, the Horse… And You starting this autumn and running until 7 February 2027,
If you’ve ever been moved by the quiet wisdom of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, this exhibition will offer a rare glimpse into how those drawings came to life.
What to expect at the exhibition
Curated by Kate Bryan, the one-room exhibition will showcase never-before-seen sketches, early studies and original illustrations from across Mackesy’s career.
Visitors will see the messy, playful process behind his work — from rough preparatory drawings to the finished illustrations that have inspired millions around the world.

The exhibition will also include:
- A brand-new drawing created for the Dulwich exhibition
- A soft audio guide narrated by Mackesy himself
- A space where visitors can create their own drawings
- Events and activities for visitors of all ages
It’s designed to be reflective, creative and deeply human — much like Mackesy’s work itself.
Why this exhibition matters
Since its release in 2019, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse has sold over 10 million copies worldwide, been translated into 50+ languages, and even inspired an Oscar-winning animated short film.
What makes Mackesy’s work resonate is its simplicity — gentle drawings paired with reflections on friendship, vulnerability, resilience and hope.
This exhibition celebrates that idea that art doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.
