Mothering Sunday is the annual celebration when we thank our mums for everything they have done and given to us.

Marked on the fourth Sunday of Lent, children traditionally spoil mothers throughout the UK with flowers and cards but this year we have compiled a list of 10 alternative ideas on how make Mother’s Day extra special. And remember – it’s not how much you spend, but how thoughtful the gift is.

Breakfast for mum

Make an effort to wake up before your mum and prepare a delicious meal (or if your culinary skills are not great a special coffee with whipped cream and all the trimmings) for her to enjoy. Add little a fresh flower from the garden, or a little card you made for her. If you don’t have the time for crafts, a little hand written note will do as long as it’s from the heart.

Compliments

Tell mum how grateful you are for her. Instead of a card write ten things you like about her or you are grateful for.

Get techy

Make a homemade video of your memories together and pop her favourite tune in the background. Watch it together and reminisce over special memories like when the dog was dressed as a leprechaun etc.

Plan to spend the day together

Make Mother’s Day special by treating mum to a meal out or visiting a place she loves or build up to a great meal and theatre event for the evening.

Family time

If possible, use this time to bring together all family generations and include grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins and as many of mum’s friends you can get together for a group celebration. If the weather is nice, a picnic in the park or a garden barbeque can be a great idea. Alternatively, make some advanced booking to one of London’s pubs like the People’s Tavern in Victoria Park serving great food and that has a children play area to keep all guests happy. If the hosting is at someone’s house, there are plenty of games that all can play whilst waiting for deserts or in between courses.

Keep it simple

If big party is not best idea for this year then no need to make it complicated or expensive. A walk in the park and an ice-cream is what some mums love, or a gift of reading for those mum only moments. We also like the idea of gifting a favourite magazine subscription, which will remind her of this day every time the new magazine comes through the door.

Treat mum with a day or the whole weekend off

This may end up to be the best gift of all! Consult with rest of family members and her friends and encourage them all to contribute towards a more special gift that she can enjoy away from family routine. Whether a course of SPA treatments or a weekend away, there some great offers to choose from:

Whatever you decide to do to spoil your mum, make sure she feels the love.
