Rumble in the Jungle Rematch” is rewriting the rules of immersive theater by blending theatre, sport, and cutting-edge technology. Launched in London in September, the show has now extended its run through to December 9th, offering an exceptional opportunity to dive into a pivotal moment in sporting history.
The Ali v Foreman Heavyweight Championship boxing match, dubbed ‘The Greatest Sporting Event of the 20th Century,’ was the first of its kind held in Africa. This immersive event resurrects the sights, sounds, and festival atmosphere that made this event legendary, offering a fresh perspective from both the Congolese and Western media.
Audiences can expect to be fully immersed in the experience, with characters like David Frost and legendary boxing promoter Don King circulating among them as the story unfolds. From the intense media attention and press conferences to the actual fight, every aspect is brought vividly to life.
Music plays a vital role in capturing the vibrant atmosphere of the time, with the Zaire ’74 festival taking center stage. The festival featured iconic acts like James Brown, BB King, Bill Withers, Sister Sledge, Miriam Makeba, and Celia Cruz, among others.
This marks the second immersive event by Rematch, known for recreating the famous Borg v McEnroe Wimbledon final of 1980. “Rumble in the Jungle Rematch” takes you on a roller coaster journey from the intimate dressing rooms to the global stage, offering an intimate look at everything from pre-match banter to the step-by-step unfolding of the fight.
The creative team behind this captivating production is led by Creative Director Miguel Hernando Torres Umba, a 12-year Secret Cinema veteran, and Writer Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu, known for his work on the Olivier-nominated “For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy.”
The musical direction is in the capable hands of Femi Temowo, a renowned composer and jazz guitarist who has worked with high-profile artists like Amy Winehouse and George Benson.
“Rumble in the Jungle Rematch” was developed in partnership with Authentic Brands Group (ABG), in collaboration with Lonnie Ali as the trustee of the Muhammad Ali Family Trust’s Muhammad Ali Enterprises.
