Popcorn! at Whitechapel Gallery: a free, family-friendly exhibition in East London

Looking for free family days out in London this summer? Head to Whitechapel Gallery in East London for Popcorn!, a fun and interactive exhibition perfect for kids, teens and curious adults alike.

Created by artist and educator Jenny Pengilly, Popcorn! is a hands-on sound experience inspired by the world of Foley artists—the people behind the sound effects in your favourite movies and video games. From snapping celery to simulate broken bones to shaking gloves for flapping wings, Popcorn! shows how the everyday can become cinematic magic.

🎨 What to Expect

  • Interactive sound props to create your own movie soundtracks
  • A DIY-style recording den called Static Studios for making and capturing sound effects
  • Playful visual prompts, image boards, and films to explore
  • A vibrant, creative space inspired by children’s learning and imagination

Developed through workshops with Phoenix School in Tower Hamlets and built around collaboration, Popcorn! celebrates the creativity of young people. Music and artwork made with Pengilly’s niece Robin also feature in the show—reminding us of the power and joy of intergenerational creativity.

👪 Perfect for Families

Whether you’re looking for things to do with kids in East London or a rainy day indoor activity, Popcorn! is free, family-friendly, and designed to spark curiosity. Children can explore, make noise, and create their own sound stories—while parents discover the hidden art of sound design in film.
