Looking for an easy outdoor activity in London that keeps little ones entertained and gets them into nature? This spring, Walthamstow Wetlands is hosting a family trail inspired by one of the most beloved children’s books ever written; The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
From 21 March to 30 June 2026, families can follow The Very Hungry Caterpillar™ Trail through the wetlands, spotting colourful creatures, solving a secret word puzzle and picking up fun nature facts along the way.
It’s designed for younger children (especially those aged 8 and under) but honestly, anyone who grew up loving the book will probably enjoy it too.
What to Expect on The Very Hungry Caterpillar Trail

The trail takes place along the main Wetlands path, with illustrated animals from the world of Eric Carle hidden around the reserve.
Along the way kids can:
- 🐛 Follow the trail and spot colourful animals hidden around the wetlands
- 🖍️ Fill in an activity booklet with fun facts and puzzles
- 🔎 Find letters on the creatures to reveal a secret word
- 🦆 Explore Walthamstow Wetlands and see wildlife and springtime nature
The route is about 1km (0.6 miles) long, making it a very manageable walk for small legs. If you return to the starting point at the end, it’s closer to 2km in total.

Where the Trail Starts
The trail begins at the Engine House Visitor Centre at Walthamstow Wetlands.
This is where you’ll collect your activity booklet, which guides you through the whole experience.
Each booking includes one booklet, but it can easily be shared between siblings or a group.
A Perfect Spring Activity for Families

If you’ve never visited Walthamstow Wetlands, this is actually one of the best times to go. Spring brings new wildlife, birds and blooming habitats across the reserve — so there’s plenty to see beyond the trail itself.
It’s also one of London’s largest urban nature reserves, which means it feels surprisingly peaceful despite being inside the city.
Just remember: the whole trail is outdoors, so bring sensible shoes and dress for the weather.
