The Easter holidays are just few days away, and if you’re looking to swap chocolate eggs for something a little more magical, the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon has curated a lineup that hits the sweet spot for every age group. Whether you’re looking to introduce your toddler to their first live performance or get your pre-teens thinking about the digital world, this Easter is all about adventure.
For the Little Explorers (Ages 3–7)
There is nothing quite like the collective “shhhhh!” of a theatre full of children as the lights go down, and this year, the classic We’re Going on a Bear Hunt returns.
The Little Angel Theatre production based on Michael Rosen’s iconic book is a masterclass in puppetry and music and a sensory-rich experience. Expect (and encourage) your little ones to join in as the cast wades through “cold rivers” and “oozy mud” in search of a mystery friend (or foe!). It’s the perfect blend of childhood nostalgia for parents and pure, unadulterated wonder for kids.
For the tech-savvy crew (Ages 7–11)
If you’re raising children who are a bit more “online,” Polka has something punchy and provocative. The Shivers is a high-octane action-comedy that tackles a very 2026 subject: misinformation, “fake news,” and internet safety.
Don’t be fooled by the serious topic—this is a high-energy production featuring ingenious live video, dance, and a cast of memorable characters. It’s a brilliant way to spark a conversation with your kids about trusting their instincts when something on their screen doesn’t quite add up.
Hands-on creative workshops
Beyond the stage, Polka is hosting a series of workshops to keep the kids busy and creative:
- Swish, Swash, Splash, Splosh! (Ages 0-4): A sensory studio session on Tuesday, 31 March, inspired by the Bear Hunt. Perfect for the littlest ones to explore textures and sounds.
- Laugh out Loud (Ages 5-8): A two-day comedy masterclass on Wednesday, 1 & Thursday, 2 April. Perfect for the budding jokester in the family.
- Escape Room Adventure (Ages 8-12): On Wednesday, 8 April, older kids can step into a world of espionage and design their very own escape room.
Why Polka?
As one of the UK’s only dedicated children’s venues, the Polka Theatre isn’t just about the shows—it’s a community hub. If you have some time before or after your show, the Play Den is open, welcoming, and entirely free to use. It’s the perfect spot to let the kids burn off some energy while you grab a coffee in the café.
“We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’s gorgeous songs and puppetry will bring joy to all our younger audiences… For older children, there’s some detection work to do in the brilliantly inventive The Shivers.” — Helen Matravers, Artistic Director
