LIFELINE, the first ever musical to have been performed at the United Nations in 2024, just had its London premiere at Southwark Playhouse Elephant. This show comes with a strong cast of ten from the West End and Broadway, a chorus of sixty real-life healthcare workers, and a compelling story of our relentless fight to cure disease and improve healthcare.

If you told us that a musical about the discovery of penicillin and the modern-day threat of antibiotic resistance would be the most gripping thing we’d see this month, we might have raised an eyebrow. But this production knows how to blend ground-breaking historical science stories into a contemporary cautionary tale. The musical weaves two timelines together with surgical precision:
- The 1928 thread follows Alexander Fleming (played with a brilliant, weary genius by Alan Vicary) in his messy St. Mary’s Hospital lab. It’s the story of a fluke discovery, in a time shaped by war, that changed humanity forever. And in this play, this revolutionary discovery is stripped of the textbook dryness and replaced with human ego, ambition, and wonder.
- The modern thread is about Aaron (Nathan Salstone), a present-day doctor facing the terrifying reality of a world where our miracle drugs are starting to fail.
“LIFELINE is a soaring, soulful tribute to the miracle of medicine and the fragility of our future.” The Young Londoner

What makes LIFELINE special
- The music and the performers: Here, it is not just about the catchy score (though the folk-influenced melodies are genuine earworms) but the ensemble energy. The production features a unique mix of professional actors alongside real-life healthcare professionals, giving the show an emotional weight that hits a nerve. It is rare to hear a chorus harmonizing about “Staphylococci,” but the song writing is so clever it actually works, and it manages to make complex biology feel like a high-stakes thriller.
- The set: The Southwark Playhouse Elephant’s stage is used to its full potential, transforming from a dusty 1920s lab to a sterile modern ward in heartbeats.
- The message: Far from being a lecture, this is a love letter to the scientists and the wonderful people around them who save us every day. And this clever play also alerts us in a gentle (but firm) way about our future.
The verdict
LIFELINE is that rare hybrid of a show: intellectually stimulating but emotionally resonant. It’s nerdy, soulful, and deeply relevant to anyone who has ever… well, taken medicine. It is a reminder that science isn’t just about beakers and Petri dishes and that behind every major medical discovery are people with hopes, dreams and challenges.
We loved how this show makes medicine funny, dramatic but most of all how it all comes together in its grand finale; a poignant show of how much we can achieve and how strong we can be if we unite and stand together to overcome all challenges.
LIFELINE is at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant (Dante Place) until 11 May 2026. Tickets: from £22.50 (Concessions)
