Free Caribbean family festival returns to Greenwich this summer

Looking for a free family day out in London this summer? The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich is bringing back its much-loved Caribbean Takeover, a free, family-friendly celebration of Caribbean culture, music, history and food-inspired creativity.
A vibrant dance performance taking place in a large indoor space, with performers wearing colourful costumes and feathers. The floor is designed like a map, and there are large banners with images and text displayed in the background. A crowd is gathered around, enjoying the lively atmosphere.

Taking place on 25 July 2026, the one-day event marks 60 years of Notting Hill Carnival and will transform the museum and surrounding grounds with live performances, workshops, talks and hands-on activities for all ages.

Families can expect steel pan music, African drumming, calypso dance, limbo performances and roaming entertainment throughout the day, alongside carnival-inspired workshops including headwear making, fibre and textile activities and interactive folk song sessions.

A storyteller in a brightly patterned dress engages a group of children seated on the floor in a room with wooden flooring and rustic decor.

There will also be family-friendly games, community-led displays and opportunities to explore Caribbean history and storytelling through talks, exhibitions and live performances across the museum.

One of the best parts? It’s completely free, making it an easy summer holiday activity to add to the calendar. More info on the website.
